The story is about an invisible string that keeps us connected to the people we love, no matter where they are. <image:title>Home - From Backyard Creek to the Chattahoochee River - Before I Knew It Was Earth Day (2026) Water splashed around our feet</image:title>
<image:caption>One of my favorite childhood memories in nature is playing in the cool backyard creek with my younger brother, Brett. It was really just a small trickle of water, but when shaded by the leaves of a dogwood tree, it became our own secret fort. We'd flip over smooth rocks to find crawdads and salamanders, collecting them in a plastic bucket while the water splashed around our feet. Summertime freedom When we got a little older, we discovered large rocks to leap on as we traveled downstream to the deeper areas. My friends and I would jump from rock to rock to each other’s house, a summer-time freedom that felt like our own world. At one point, you might have found us climbing a fence to reach our destination or looking downward to see what was in the knee-deep water. That little creek fed into Big Creek and eventually found its way to the Chattahoochee River. Heading out to hike, explore, and splash my feet in the water has never left me. Today, my husband and I still chase that same joy, taking the Jeep out to hike, explore, and stay connected to nature in the ways we love.</image:caption>

In much the same way, Charles Babbage’s Analytical Engine used similar instructions to perform complex calculations. Ada realized, long before most people, that creativity and technology are not opposites. They both follow patterns and build on structure, and together they can create something much more complex than either could on its own. That idea still matters today.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - Two Years Strong: We Can Do Hard Things - October marks two years since I started working out at The Y</image:title>
<image:caption>Three days a week. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Rain or shine, hot or cold, I show up. Most mornings, I roll out of bed, lace up my shoes, and head out the door before I’m barely awake. What I didn’t realize when I began was the complex relationship between consistency and fitness. Some days I push myself. Some days I just show up. And both count. What is the most important thing I have learned? We can do hard things. Not because it’s simply a challenge or fun every time, but because somewhere along the way, we stop asking if we can, and start pushing and realize that we already are. That we have been; every step, every drop of sweat, all prove the same truth:</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - Two Years Strong: We Can Do Hard Things - Strength isn’t loud. It’s steady.</image:title>
<image:caption>This is not the way I generally work. I’m inspired, making lists, and craving creativity. But somehow the days became weeks, then months, and at the two-year mark, I feel empowered and confident. I’ve reaffirmed my worth and potential as someone turning 56 in a week. I feel immense pride in having shown up, worked hard, and embraced the journey. We can both do difficult things. I want to thank all of the instructors—I think I’ve been in everyone’s class at some time in the last two years. I really want to say why I’m thankful. I’m grateful for you being there, every time, on time, with a smile, different music, a fantastic variety of combinations for all types of Burn classes, H.I.T.T. classes, Bootcamp, Stretch, YFit, and Cardio Strength, to name a few. Here are cool mosses deep, And thro' the moss the ivies creep, And in the stream the long-leaved flowers weep, And from the craggy ledge the poppy hangs in sleep.” Me: Appearances can be deceiving.</image:caption>

And there’s Mike photobombing from behind with his sly sense of humor. Jake is my brother Brett’s son, and Mike is the great person who stepped in to fill that role after Brett died. Clearly, someone ate all his vegetables growing up. The picture was taken back in high school, but today, Jake’s even more impressive. He’s now on the path to earning his Doctorate in Physical Therapy. Jake is smart, hard-working, kind, and funny. He’s not just tall; Jake stands out in every way that matters, not that I’m biased or anything.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - Thirty-Seven Years: Remembering My Brother Brett - Brett is taking my sons and his own to a U.G.A. football game. He loved being an uncle, but being a father meant the most to him.</image:title>
<image:caption>Grief after losing my brother. Losing my brother Brett at 37 changed how I see grief, memory, and connection. A drunk driver killed him one late afternoon on a rural road. Nothing about it made sense, and moving from shock to grief was difficult. When I realized I had lost not just Brett but our memories and the future I imagined, everything changed forever. He was only thirty-seven. Remembering Brett Through Childhood Memories Brett and I shared a lifetime of memories, but now our history together is gone. The special moments of our childhood and the things only we understood are lost. As an adult, I loved when Brett came to me for advice. In the 17 years since he died, I’ve gone to events where we both should have been. We would have faced our parents’ health problems as a team. More than anything, I miss standing with him and laughing at something ridiculous. I always thought we’d grow old together. The past and the future are taken away. When people lose someone, there’s often a word for it. If you lose a spouse, you’re called a widow or a widower. But if you lose a sibling, you’re just someone who lost a brother. It took me years to realize that even though my grief doesn’t have a name, I can still grieve in my own way. My parents were devastated and spent years just going through the motions. Even now, I remember the day of the funeral and how it felt to be seen differently. But I learned something important. We have to find a path and a place for our own grief. There’s a support group for people who have lost a sibling called Compassionate Friends. I hope to learn more from them and to recommend them to friends or family who need support. "They say that siblings are the forgotten mourners and I believe this to be true. Their grief eventually forgotten in time by all, even their parents, blinded by the loss of their child, unable to 'see' their remaining children through their own pain." — Shared story from a bereaved mother via The Compassionate Friends Victoria</image:caption>

      <image:title>Home - Tattoo #196: A Chance Encounter</image:title>
<image:caption>An Unexpected Invitation I was thinking about adding to a tattoo I already have, but I didn’t have a plan. We had just moved back to Atlanta, and Greg and I were flipping through artist portfolios at a local shop when we found ourselves sharing a couch with a kind-eyed man with a long beard. He introduced himself as Don, and within minutes, we were pulled into his story. He was visiting shops around the country to share his journey. He asked if I’d like to get a matching tattoo with him, to share in his search for individual connection, and yet, at the same time, participate in something bigger than ourselves. Don would get whatever you were getting and didn’t want to influence what it would be. He wanted it to be unique to the “stranger” he had just met. Don’s life project was ultimately called StrangerInk.org. Ultimately, Don thought of it as a way of being remembered, but it was primarily a means of connection. At first, I wasn’t sure. Greg and I went home to discuss it, and I began researching Don’s project. News stations had reported its beginning near his hometown in Ohio, and then also reported on news stations in Kentucky and beyond. Social media featured friends with matching tattoos he made while on his mission to make connections—with 194 strangers and counting—all while living with terminal cancer.</image:caption>

The photo is my pink daylily garden this year! This is not an affiliate link- I’m spreading Hermocallis love! Their Daylily Festival is 6/27-6/28. I’ve been twice.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Father's Day was beautiful for relaxing in the shade by the lake near my parents' house. Later, we enjoyed making bead garden stakes with my aunt, who lives in assisted living, and my uncle, who is in a nursing home. This little surprise meant so much to all of us. We left two garden stakes to add color to the garden at the nursing home. It turned out to be a perfect day.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Sometimes, this happens when you’re not exactly sure what you’re looking for. The Very Hungry Caterpillar was Brett’s and my favorite book. We were fascinated by the holes in the pages, especially the illustrations. The themes of transformation and hope, as illustrated by Eric Carle, are one reason I surround myself with images of butterflies today.</image:caption>

<image:caption>My family and I have moved a few times due to my husband's job. Moving can be both challenging and exciting. When we moved, our top priority was finding a home in the best school district. We also looked for outdoor activities and a good gym or athletic club. We decided to get a family membership at The Y as it met all our needs. My husband and son enjoy swimming, but I missed weight training, movement, and music, and didn't know where or how to begin.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Last month, I had the opportunity to visit Miami. Since I’m a mountain and lake person, I was initially ambivalent. I was not thinking about adventure or having an open mind. When I arrived, a soul from a different part of the South met the high-rise heat, neon nights, and the unexpected beauty of contrast. Bright colors, palm trees, and a diverse mix of people surrounded me.</image:caption>
