Lauren Daigle “You Say”
This #MusicMonday is exciting for me because I’m listening to an artist I’ve never heard before.
Finding Lauren Daigle through my family makes it feel even more meaningful. Lauren Daigle is one of my cousin Toni’s favorite Christian singers. I remember Toni calling me, full of excitement, as she headed to a concert with her daughters. Her enthusiasm was contagious. Toni lives her Christian beliefs every day and teaches me just by being herself. I consider myself an Episcotarian, which is an Episcopal + Unitarian. I didn’t grow up in a Christian home, so talking about faith can be hard for me, but Toni’s excitement helped me start my own journey with Lauren Daigle’s music. In “You Say,” Lauren sings about identity, devotion, and staying strong, which are ideas I really appreciate.
I noticed that her music connects with all kinds of people.
As I learned more about Lauren, who is a Christian singer-songwriter from Louisiana, I noticed that her music connects with all kinds of people, even some in the LGBTQ community. When someone asked Lauren Daigle if homosexuality is a sin, she said she has close loved ones who are homosexual and answered, “I’m not God.” That response helped me see how many people her music reaches and why it means so much to so many.
Lauren’s soulful voice and lyrics speak to people, especially Toni. She loves the song “You Say,” and it was also one of her late husband’s favorites. I understand why. I added it to my playlist, and now I often catch myself singing the chorus in my car: “You say I am strong when I think I am weak...” That chorus is now part of my own memories too.
