Story time with “The Invisible String”

childhood kite memory honoring brother Brett

An invisible string that keeps us connected.

Some friends told me about The Invisible String by Patrice Karst, a bestselling picture book illustrated by Joanne Lew-Vriethoff. The story is about an invisible string that keeps us connected to the people we love, no matter where they are. The string can stretch anywhere: to school, home, work, outer space, the jungle, a submarine, or even heaven.

We are connected to people we love.

This imaginative book speaks not only to children ages 3–7 but also to adults. It explores staying connected to those we love in many different situations:

  • separation anxiety

  • grief and loss

  • family transitions

  • the idea that love still connects us across distance and time

Reading it made me think about my brother.

When we were kids, Brett had kite-flying birthday parties every March. I can still picture us running across the field near our house with bright kites overhead and spools of string unraveling behind us in the wind.

Back then, the string was something literal, something we held tightly in our hands so the kite would not drift away.

Now, after losing Brett, those kite strings feel like something more. They remind me of the invisible string that still connects us through memory, love, and the moments we shared. Even though I can no longer see or reach him, I still feel tied to him in quiet and unexpected ways.

Who does an invisible string still connect to you?
